Types of Packaging Materials Used for Industrial Food Packaging

The packaging is mostly done to hold the contents of the package securely in order to avoid breakage and leakage and to keep the foods from various hazards like heat, germs, moisture pickup, moisture loss etc. There are different kinds of packages available for different kinds of packaging. Here are the types of packaging materials used for industrial packaging –

Plastic Films
They are actually flexible packaging films and they are very light. They are strategically designed to protect food and other materials against gas, heat and moisture. They add extra weight to the foot and they fit as per the shape of material which is being transported. They don’t take a lot of space and they have wet and dry strengths and they are convenient for the manufacturers, consumer and retailer. Milk and milk products are packed in these films.

Polythene
They are a lot less costly as compared to other packaging items. They are known to be the great moisture barrier. But they cannot control odor. So, it is important to choose high density polythene which is stronger, thicker and better barrier against gas and moisture.

Metal Containers
There are two types of metal containers used for packaging – metal cans with push-on lids to store dry foods like milk powder, dry yeast, and coffee powder, and double seam cans that store canned foods. Double seam cans are suitable for various types of foods as they are made of tin-plated steel or aluminum. They provide complete protection against moisture and they are tamper proof.
